Surprises happen. And the ones the ones that happen when you least expect them are the best. On a whim to see one of the towns where my oldest brother works, I discovered the birthplace of Cole Porter and the supposed Circus Capital of the World in Peru, Indiana.

It just so happened the Cole Porter Festival was winding down on the Sunday we visited. Unfortunately we were unable to partake in the festival. Porter's birth house is still standing and has been turned into a bed and breakfast.

Cole Porter is best known as a composer from the Great American Songbook. Porter's best known Broadway shows are "Anything Goes" and "Kiss Me, Kate."

Peru is also known as the Circus Capital of the World. While eating lunch with a friend that is a professional clown, I broth this fact to her. Without a beat she said, "Every midwest town could easily claim that!"

So I dug into why!

Since 1960, the Peru Amateur Circus has been based out of Peru. Each summer, for eight days in July, 200 young people put on a show that transforms the town of about 11,000 residents into a spectacular festival, culminating with the Circus Heritage Parade.
